China's Ice Dancers Face Investigation After Displaying Prop Weapon at Competition

The International Skating Union are conducting a formal inquiry after a pair of Chinese ice dancers were seen holding an object resembling a toy ballistic missile during a grand prix figure skating event.

Broadcast video captured Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing waiting with a large toy in the form of a rocket marked “DF-61” as they awaited their scores in the “kiss and cry” area during the event.

The DF-61 represents a recently introduced China-produced ground-launched long-range weapon designed for carrying nuclear weapons, that had been unveiled at a military parade last month.

Officials is aware of an unsuitable plush item appears to have been among those thrown on to the rink by spectators after a performance during the competition,” the organization commented via a release.

The item was then handled by the skaters after their performance. The ISU apologizes for the incident and will investigate further.”

The duo placed eighth of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the US.
